Lost Bet

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote Variations for his brother Julian after he lost a bet on a Leyton Orient football match.

 

The 1978 VARIATIONS...

…album, featuring Julian and the rock band Colosseum II (Gary Moore, Jon Hiseman and Don Airey, alongside Barbara Thompson and Rod Argent) peaked at number two on the U.K. album charts.

Something to Bragg About

The opening theme was also used as the theme to Melvyn Bragg’s The South Bank Show.

 

"Variation 5" became...

…”Unexpected Song,” with lyrics by Don Black, which was then included in the Tell Me on a Sunday part of Song & Dance.

Guitar Hero

Andrew used “Variation 7” in his latest musical, School of Rock—Dewey and Ned play Guitar Hero to it.
