SCHOOL OF ROCK – THE MUSICAL, SUNSET BOULEVARD AND GLENN CLOSE ARE AMONG THE NOMINEES

New York (March 6, 2017) – Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals were awarded 10 2017 Olivier Award nominations for the 2016-2017 season in the U.K. this morning. The legendary composer’s musicals School of Rock – The Musical and Sunset Boulevard, both also enjoying smash hit runs on Broadway, and Jesus Christ Superstar were responsible for the multiple nominations.

School of Rock – The Musical, which opened this November to rave reviews at the New London Theatre, scored three nominations, including “Best New Musical,” “Outstanding Achievement in Music,” and “Best Actor” (David Fynn).

The ENO production of Sunset Boulevard at the London Coliseum was awarded two nominations for “Best Musical Revival,” and a “Best Actress” nod for its star, three-time Tony Award-winner, Glenn Close.

The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar was recognized with six nominations, including “Best Musical Revival,” “Outstanding Achievement in Music,” “Best Choreographer” (Drew McOnie); “Best Actor in a Musical” (Tyrone Huntley); “Best Lighting Design” (Lee Curran); and “Best Sound Design” (Nick Lidster).

The 2017 Olivier Awards will be presented at a ceremony at Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

On Broadway, Andrew Lloyd Webber has the rare distinction of having four smash hit musicals running simultaneously, an accomplishment he shares only with Rodgers and Hammerstein. The four currently running musicals include School of Rock – The Musical at the Winter Garden Theatre, Cats at the Neil Simon Theatre, Sunset Boulevard at the Palace Theatre, and The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre.
